Wednesday, June 8, 2016 - 12:16 PM by Daniel Weatherhead

Subiaco and Peel played out one of the games of the season on Sunday and it was the underdogs who clinched a famous victory.

The Thunder got off to a fast start, kicking two goals in less than three minutes as they dominated the first five minutes of the game.

The away team held on to the lead until the quarter-time break, before the Lions produced their best football during the second quarter.

The reigning premiers dominated possession and locked the ball inside their forward half for long periods to kick four goals and take a seven-point lead into half-time.

The third quarter saw the lead change hands four times, setting up a thrilling finish in which the Thunder would register one of its best ever victories.

Subiaco kicked away early in the final term and coach Jarrad Schofield then sent an extra man into defence in an attempt to protect the Lions’ slender lead.

But Peel found a way to kick two quick goals and steal the four points, registering an 11.8 (74) to 10.10 (70) victory.

Matt De Boer was the leading possession winner on the ground, amassing 36 possessions, while Blair Bell kicked three goals.

Brady Grey racked up 22 possessions and kept the pressure on the Lions with an impressive 11 tackles.

It was a strong performance by Peel, who now go into the break for the state game in fourth position.

The Thunder have opened up a three-game break on sixth-placed East Perth in the race for a finals spot and trail ladder leaders South Fremantle by just one game.

Their next opponents are the Bulldogs, who will travel to Bendigo Bank Stadium on June 19.
