ROUND 9 - LEAGUE 'THUNDER WITHSTAND SWANS SURGE FOR GREAT WIN'

Monday, May 15, 2017 - 9:58 PM

The Thunder had an impressive victory last weekend with a 21 point win over Swan Districts, who are third on the ladder, two spots above the Thunder.

Thunder held their own against the favoured Swans’ with the defensive team working hard to halt the Swans progress.

The first quarter was low scoring with both sides maintaining pressure and good defensive play, and by the first break the Thunder was just a single point behind.

The defensive structure led by Griffin Logue and utilising key players Luke Ryan and Rory O’Brien was a force to be reckoned with as they squashed the Swans’ push back in the second and third quarters.

The fourth quarter was a tough one for the Thunder as the Swans came back from the three quarter break with renewed energy.

The Swans pushed hard and racked up four goals before the 10 minute mark in the fourth quarter.

The Swans were unable to sustain their comeback and a goal from stand out player Sean Darcy saw the Thunder recoup and put the pressure back on.

Peel thunder player Traye Bennell said “The team played better this week compared to other weeks when they had lost.”

“I think we played better. I think we’re playing four quarters now.” he said.

Thunder fans weren't the only ones concerned in the fourth quarter.  Bennell said “I was a little worried myself at the Swans’ come back.”

“I thought we were going to go down there for a little bit but we fought it out which was good” he said.

Brennan Cox said “ The team still had a bit to work on with the fourth quarter extending the lead and not letting the opposition come back.”

“I thought the team played very well, last quarter dropped off a little bit but we held our lead in the end and got the win.” he said.

The win was the fourth for Peel Thunder this season and marks them as very tough competition heading into next week’s round against Perth Demons at Lathlain Park.
