Match Report: Peel Thunder Vs Subiaco - 19 March 2016

Peel is unlikely to see Harley Bennell back at Bendigo Bank Stadium this season after the Fremantle recruit starred in the Thunder’s narrow loss to Subiaco on Saturday.

The home side boasted 18 Fremantle-listed players for the clash against the Lions, but lost the game in the third quarter when the reigning premiers piled on five goals.

A last-quarter rally saw the Thunder draw to within two points, but a late Subiaco goal finally snuffed out the challenge and secured the victory 12.10 (82) to 10.14 (74).

Bennell, who was traded from Gold Coast Suns to Fremantle over the summer, booted four goals and had 23 disposals in a performance that will likely earn him selection for Fremantle’s opening game of the season this weekend.

Peel Captain Gerald Ugle was one of four non-Fremantle players in the side. He said he was disappointed with the team’s performance but was pleased to have had the chance to play alongside Bennell.

"It was exciting having Harley down playing. It's a good opportunity to learn off him," Ugle said.

But he was also full of praise for 2013 Sandover Medal winner Rory O’Brien, who returned to the club from East Fremantle over the summer, and Brad Walsh, who returned to Peel after one season with Carlton.

Ugle said O’Brien would provide the club’s young players with a strong role model and Walsh would also prove to be a leader.

The Thunder got away to a strong start, led by two early goals to Bennell, finding themselves two goals up at the first break.

The home side maintained its two-goal advantage through the second quarter, but struggled to keep pace with Subiaco in the third quarter, turning for home nine points behind the Lions.

Other notable performers for Peel included Clancee Pearce, who racked up 11 marks and 32 possessions, and Zac Clarke, who dominated the ruck with 35 hit outs.

Youngster Sam Collins had an excellent first outing for the Thunder, taking 14 marks and gathering 20 possessions, while Lachie Weller had 21 possessions and kicked two goals.

Peel will be looking for its first win of the season when a rejuvenated East Fremantle travels to Mandurah on Saturday.
