Pre-Season for the Peel Thunder Colts is in full swing

Tuesday, December 18, 2018 - 9:02 AM

The pre-season for the Peel Thunder Colts is in full swing with the pre-Xmas phase of the Simply Energy WAFL Colts Pre-Season wrapping up this week. Over the last four and a bit weeks, the 80 plus players on the track have all made great strides with their strength, conditioning and skill development.

The sessions have seen the whole squad of 80 train together on Monday nights at Bortolo Reserve in Greenfields, with Tuesday and Thursday sessions for Mandurah based players taking place at David Grays Arena. The club has again invested heavily in our country zone, with our South West boys training with the South West talent hub at Donnybrook on Wednesday nights with the East Perth and Swan Districts South West based players, and Friday nights at Brunswick Oval under the tutelage of Garry Dyer.

The squad has undertaken a variety of different tests under Strength and Conditioning Coach Mason Gittins, with a 2km time trial, the yo-yo test, 300m time trials, max bench press and repeat strength tests seeing some strong competition amongst the group.

The squad has also had a strong focus on football, with coach Michael Glassborow having a high focus on skill development and decision making. There has been a concerted effort to maximise the amount of touches the players are getting at this point of the pre-season and develop player skill sets.

The squad played some intra squad matches on Tuesday 11th December, and following that the list has been reduced to 65 heading into the Christmas break.

The Colts program wishes to congratulate Durak Tucker on his selection to the Sydney Swans in the recent rookie draft. Durak is a great example for the playing group of how to overcome adversity, with the strength of his character a benchmark for the aspiring players in the program. The program also wishes to congratulate Tyrone Thorne and Jack Sears for their selection in the initial Under 18s State Talent Hub, who completed their first camp last week at Subiaco Oval.

The squad breaks on 18/12 for Mandurah players and 19/12 for SW players, with the next phase of training commencing on 14/1/19 at Bortolo Reserve at 5:15pm.

Peel Thunder wishes all players and their families the best over the Christmas and New Year periods and look forward to the return of the players in 2019.
