Thunder WAFLW update with Coach Adam Dancey
Round 1 of the inaugural WAFLW season kicked off on May 5th, with the newly formed Peel Thunder Women’s team taking the field against last year’s reigning Premiers East Fremantle.
Both teams were without their AFLW stars, however the football was expected to be fierce. Our goal as a team was to provide an honest performance with plenty of effort, and the girls gave us plenty.
With a new game plan and style, our girls went out to show their talents. Our side contained 12 debutants for the club with 10 of those players still eligible for under 18 selection.
East Fremantle won the first centre clearance and kicked and early goal, from there we found our groove, our ball movement was fast and after a couple of tweaks we went into half time a couple of points up.
As is often seen in developing sides, our ability to maintain focus and our intensity waned allowing the Sharks to get a jump on us early in the 3rd quarter.
The final term we asked the girls to show us truth to their character, again the girls responded to the challenge and fought out the game, unfortunately the damage done in the third term was too great for us to overcome and the sharks won.
The girls have shown extremely positive signs to the new program, both on and off the field, and we will be an exciting side to watch as the year progresses.
Round 2 sees us with the bye, however WAFLW Senior Development and Rogers Cup teams play at Padbury against West Perth Saturday - get around them!
