Around the Grounds | Round 5

Tuesday, August 18, 2020 - 1:02 PM by Owen Davies

The Rogers Cup girls took on East Fremantle who were the last side to actually beat Peel in a home and away fixture, last season.

In beautiful Saturday morning conditions, the game was neck and neck all-day with the Thunder once again trailing at every change and had to come back from a goal down at three-quarter-time to steal it late and kept the unbeaten streak alive, winning by a goal.

Kayleesha Ugle kicked 2 including the winning goal right before the final siren through a 50m Penalty. Shauna Bicker, Bella Mann and Ella Tvrdeic also kicked majors as the girls remain a game clear on top of the table with another top of the table clash this week against last years runners up away at South Fremantle.

It was another struggle for the Colts on Saturday Afternoon as they proved no match for a white-hot Subiaco, who were coming off a massive victory a week prior against South Fremantle.

Subi jumped on the board early with the opening 2 goals of the contest, before Jaxon Egan and Luke Taylor kicked the next couple to level the scores. Unfortunately, defence was an issue, as the Colts conceded 4.1 from only 7 inside 50’s. The lack of defensive pressure was highlighted the most when Subiaco’s Jacob Evitt gathered the ball from the defensive half and had 4 running bounces before kicking truly. At the other end of the ground, the Thunder had chances but couldn’t capitalise going inside 50 – 10 times for 2.3.

It didn’t get much better over the next 3 quarters as Subiaco kicked 15 of the last 20 goals, including 12 straight from midway through the first quarter. Subiaco were lethal going forward, scoring 22.8 from only 40 inside 50’s meaning they generated a score 75% of the time they entered their attacking zone.

12 Lions managed to have 12 disposals or more with 10 unique goal kickers, once again showing an even spread of contributors. Unfortunately for the Thunder, only 6 players managed to hit 12 disposals as they were comprehensively smashed in possession having 45 less disposals 233 - 278 for the game as Subi crushed the Colts in the end 7.7 (49) to 22.8 (140) a margin of 91 points.

On a day that your side concedes 22 goals it’s hard to put a defender in the best players but it’s hard to go past the statistical lines of David Yaccob and Isiah Winder. David once again was efficient with his disposal down back, with 17 disposals at 82% efficiency with 3 tackles and 3 Inside 50’s. Isiah again collected a game-high 27 disposals, 17 contested, 8 marks and 3 score involvements playing a role in defence in the second half. Luke Polson played well splitting time down forward and, in the ruck, with 15 disposals, 10 contested, 3 contested marks and 7 hit-outs. Zac Trigwell provided a target on the limited number of deep entries, taking 5 marks, 2 contested and kicked 2 last quarter goals.

The evening fixture at David Grays saw a top of the table clash as the Thunder looked to inflict Subiaco’s first loss of the season.

It was cold and wet and there was a pretty big gail blowing to one end of the ground which made it incredibly difficult for the side kicking into to escape from their back half. In a game that was goal for goal for much of the first half, Subiaco made a little bit more of their opportunities as they went in a goal to the good at the end of the second quarter.

With the wind at their backs in the third quarter the Thunder turned the tables and kicked 3 straight with Kate Bartlett kicking a set shot close to three-quarter-time to have the girls go in leading by 5 at the last change.

Unfortunately, with conditions worsening, the girls just couldn’t escape from their back half with a lot of kicks traded back and forth between the two arcs. The girls battled admirably throughout the last quarter but Subi again showed why they are the side to beat this year as they took one of the rare last quarter opportunities to seal the win and hold onto top spot.

Sarah Verrier was very good throughout. Jaide Briggs bobbed up with a couple of goals which were gold in the conditions. Abby Barnden continued to bring good tackle pressure, while Courtney Rowley and Ebony Dowson were also key contributors.

The girls are away to Swans this week on Saturday ahead of the mens League game as they look to get back on track.
