WAFLW Finals Wrap

Tuesday, June 22, 2021 - 7:33 AM

Our Semi Final against Swans was played at Bassendean in cold and wet conditions but the contest was red hot and fierce.  The girls started in outstanding fashion and with our defence limiting Swans scoring ability we manage to gain field position and break through with a goal late in the first quarter to lead at quarter time 1.2 (8) to 0.1 (1).

The second quarter was just as fierce with the ball rebounding between half back lines with neither side able to kick a goal.  The third quarter saw Swans dominate and control field position but our defence stood firm and held out against the constant Swans attack however Swans drew level 1.4 (10) to 0.10 (10) which set up a thrilling last quarter.

With the girls primed to play a grand final on our home oval and a with a positive mindset with the way we had performed we set ourselves for a big quarter.  Swans dominated the opening 10-minutes but once again our defence stood firm however Swans took the lead by one-point and it was time to take the game on.  The girls responded and started to gain field position and on the back of that good work Kate Bartlett was awarded a free kick 30-metres out and the ever reliable KB slotted the goal to give us the lead.  The last three-minutes was nail biting with the ball locked in Swans forward half and however we shut down every entry to win our way through a home grand final 2.4 (16) to 0.11 (11) in two weeks’ time.

Our team defence and work rate was outstanding all day in very difficult conditions.  Best players were Ebony Bilcich, Gracie Fenton, Chloe Wrigley, Cassie Davidson and Abby Barnden.  Goal Scorers were Katie-Jayne Grieves and Kate Bartlett.

The Reserves played East Fremantle at Revo Fitness Stadium also in wet conditions and the girls performed really strongly but unfortunately fell just short in the end with East Fremantle booking a spot in the grand final 3.5 (23) to 2.5 (17).  Best players were Whitney Benson, Chloe College, Ariana Hetherington, Ava Muir and Bailey Molloy.  Goal Kickers were Molloy & Muir with one-goal each.  The Reserves now play Swan Districts in a Preliminary final this Sunday 27 June at 12.30pm at Steel Blue Oval in Bassendean.

The Rogers had a thrilling encounter against East Fremantle at Revo Fitness Stadium in a high quality Rogers Cup game in wet conditions, and whilst East Fremantle peppered the goals late the girls were able to hang on and progress to a preliminary final with a one-point win 3.3 (21) to 2.8 (20).  Best players were Tessa Kongras, Olivia Waldeck, Billie-Jae Thompson, Emily Gunton and Megan Bain.  Goal kickers were Waldeck, Tajah Griffiths and Rikki-Lee Morgan with one-goal each.  This weekend the girls take on South Fremantle at Bassendean on Sunday at 10.30am for a chance to play in this year’s grand final.

Well done to all the girls on still having three teams in the finals and special thanks to all support shown to all the teams over the weekend.
