State Academy Squad to Launch Campaign in South Australia
THE State 16s Academy squad will head to Adelaide later this week to play their first match at the NAB AFL U16 National Championships.
The side completed its third and final practise match before the championships, beating the Subiaco colts by five points in wet conditions at the weekend.
State Talent Manager Adam Jones was encouraged by the performance.
“They were much improved from their second trial game," Jones said.
"The backline played well, in particular Darcy Peterson and Thomas Cathcart, while through the middle Jaxon Douglas was solid and Harrison Creighton competed strongly."
But there’s an element of uncertainty about how the team will perform, beginning on Sunday when it plays South Australia.
“It’s hard to tell what the team will produce because in the 16’s you have no idea what the opposition is going to bring to the table, but this 16s group is quite even across the board, so we’re hoping to put out a competitive team,” Jones said.
WA’s Under 18s squad was impressive against the Subiaco reserves as they continue preparations for their opening game at the NAB AFL U18 National Championships.
WA scored a 34-point victory, with several key inclusions resulting in a much-improved performance.
“For their second hit-out the boys gelled well," Jones said.
"A lot of the group played some football together last year, but there are also several new players who’ve been added to the group.
"We’re very happy with how the side is placed heading into the first championship game."
Jones said there was a good spread of contributors against Subiaco’s reserves.
“Key defenders Jedd Busslinger and Hugh Davies were excellent, taking several intercept marks," Jones said.
"Steely Green, Elijah Hewitt, Reuben Ginbey and Darcy Jones all showed good signs in the midfield.
"Corey Tregenza was the pick of the forwards, kicking three goals and taking a few strong marks."
WA plays Vic Metro on Saturday July 2 at Ikon Park in Melbourne to kickstart its NAB AFL U18 National Championship campaign.
