WEEKLY REVIEW | WAFLW ROUND 3
WAFLW
Round 3 saw the WAFLW travel to Leederville oval against newcomers East Perth with a focus to repeat our strong performance from last week against Claremont. The first quarter was a hard physical encounter against the wind. We managed two goals and kept East Perth scoreless, taking a handy lead into the break 2.1 – 0.0
In the second quarter East perth’s pressure went to another level and they found ways to start to penetrate our strong defence, but we managed to limit their scoring opportunities whilst kicking one of our own. We took a three-goal lead into half time but wanted to lift our performance. Half time 3.3 – 0.3.
After a strong discussion at half time the girls were fired up to take our game to another level. The work rate went up, but we didn’t get the reward for effort. East Perth kept the pressure up and tagged key players which is a new challenge for our young side to become accustomed to. Jorja Haines went down with an ankle injury late in the quarter just as we were pressing hard to hit the scoreboard again. However we won the quarter and extended the lead into the last 4.4 - 1.3.
Knowing a win will put us back in the top 4, we were highly motivated to run out the game strongly. The girls worked tirelessly and the effort was enormous without the reward we deserved but managed to increase the lead and secure a very valuable 4 points. Peel winning 5.6 – 1.5.
Best players were Chloe Wrigley with 23 disposals and 17 tackles, Greta McKinley and Ebony ( Chippy) Dowson’s run of half back, Tanisha Anderson up forward with 3 goals and Lara Thomas on the wing with 14 disposals and 2 tackles.
PEEL THUNDER - 5.6 36
EAST PERTH - 1.5 11
Goals – Tanisha Anderson 3, Kira Phillips and Jorja Haines 1
ROGERS CUP
In this week’s game against East Perth we welcomed Cylah Henderson Pegg into the team for her debut for Peel Thunder.
The first quarter was a competitive one with both teams finishing with two scoring shots, despite us being down 6-9 in forward entries. Based on the stats we switched off in the second quarter, allowing 15 entries to our two, negative 3 clearances and leaking 5 majors. In the second half the move of AJ Rowley to CHB and Lucy Kane to CHF which stemmed the flow and they only had four scoring shots to our two. There were good signs for us with our rucks on top again, we were only -4 on the day for clearances, our forward line showed better cohesion and structure with Ash Norwood taking some impressive contested marks.
During the game East Perth worked the ball through the contests and consistently utilised a player on the defensive side of the packs. Our inability to adjust and shut this player down cost us many metres of territory. Our backs worked hard but it was demoralising for us when East Perth kicked four of their majors from deep in the pockets.
Our three opponents so far this year have all had a majority of their players from last year’s team, at Peel we have many new players in our Rogers team, with lots of last year’s players having stepped up and are acquitting themselves well at League level. Lots of our young and inexperienced players are growing with confidence each week and I am sure that a win is just around the corner.
