WAFLW WEEKLY REVIEW | ROUND 6

WAFLW

After a week off the WAFLW team took on East Fremantle at home for Round 6 on Ladies day.

An early morning message saw Anke Grove having to be replaced after a dog bite which bought the X factor of Aisha Wright into the side for the first time this year. It was also exciting to have Gracie Fenton and Makinley Minchin also play their first games for the club this year.

The side was keen for a big game to honour Ebony (Chippy) Dowson as she played her 150th senior game.

We showed really good signs in the first quarter with our ball movement and pressure laying 19 tackles but were unable to get enough ball forward to hit the score board however restricted the Sharks to 2 scoring shots.  Quarter time score was 1.1 – 0.0.

The second quarter saw East Fremantle’s mature bodies dominate as our pressure dropped off.  Once again we struggled to get the ball to our forwards to have any impact on the scoreboard.  East Fremantle took a commanding lead into half time 5.7 – 0.0.

Disappointed not to hit the score board before half time.  We reset the side and minds with the focus on scoring.  The third saw our pressure and intensity return.  Holly Britton was hard at the ball in the centre and created our first goal off the boot of Ebonee Hardie.  Then Sophie Johansen won a strong contested ball against 3 opponents to run into an open goal for her first WAFLW goal. However East Fremantle managed one of their own.  6.9 – 2.0.

As the crowd was starting to build up for the WAFL game we were keen to finish strong.  The girls threw everything at East Fremantle but they held strong until Tanisha Anderson was strong in a marking contest which allowed Bridey Jackman to read the ball off hands and kick her first WAFLW goal.   Even though we outscored the Sharks in the second half the damage was done with them running out 35 point winners. 7.11 to 3.0.

While the result was disappointing there were a lot of positives to come out of the game with the development of our younger players and having Gracie Fenton and Aisha Wright returning to the side.  The most pleasing aspect was to see the team adapt to a different style of play, and while we didn’t execute 100% it was pleasing to see it already having impact and put us in good stead going forward

Final Score

PT 3.0 – EF 7.11

Goal Kickers were Ebonee Hardie, Sophie Johansen and Bridey Jackman

Best players were Abby Barnden, Ebony Dowson, Krystal Carter, Kayla Bradshaw and Dakota Sexton

ROGERS CUP

The Rogers Cup team took on Perth in round 6.  Coming off five straight losses, with four of them away from home, it was a great relief to record our first win for the year.

Our focus for the game was pressure, wing use and run.  Using this plan the team gained control of the game in the second quarter.  The players managed to combine well, both individually and throughout the lines, to provide good service to our forwards.  By the third quarter we had control of the scoreboard and the team did not let up.

Final Score

PT 10.7 – Perth 3.3

Goal kickers

Ashlee Norwood 4, Jade Bell 3, Charlotte Beard 2, Esther Amory 1

Best Players

Ava Cristodero, Tessa Kongras, Sofia Fitzpatrick, Holly Bilcich, Billie Jae Thompson
