WAFLW WEEKLY REVIEW | ROUND 7
WAFLW
Round 7 saw the WAFLW take on Subiaco at Lane Group stadium. With the state 16’s and 18’s girls away it allowed opportunities for Tessa Kongras, Holly Bilcich and Anna Watts to make their league debuts.
The girls were set for a big game to honour the ANZAC spirit. Our focus was to have more forward entries and play Peel football. We started the game well however Subiaco raised the intensity and dominated field position. We had limited opportunities forward and were unable to hit the scoreboard. Subiaco taking a handy lead into the first break 2.3 – 0.0
With a focus to raise our intensity and hunt the football, our game went up a level and we took control in the second. An inspirational effort by Ebony Bilcich on the wing to beat 3 players lifted the side and we scored our first goal through Aisha Wright. Our excitement and energy levels lifted, our defence got on top with Chelsea Hutchinson taking some big goal saving marks, releasing Chippy Dowson and Greta McKinley into space to set up our second goal off the boot of Tanisha Anderson. Tessa Kongras had a huge role on debut tagging former AFLW player Tia Toth and did an outstanding job keeping Tia to three possessions up to the halfway point of the second quarter. Although we trailed at half time the excitement and energy we generated in keeping Subiaco scoreless was a step in the right direction. Subiaco leading 2.3-2.1.
In the third quarter both sides had opportunities forward but we were unable to make the most of ours, while Subiaco did and kicked 3 goals and 2 behinds for the term. While we didn’t score our effort was good but our finish needs some polishing.
The last quarter we set ourselves for a big come back like last year, but it wasn’t to be, Subiaco took control from the outset, and we struggled to win possession. Subiaco dominated field position and hit the score board with 3 goals 8 and kept us scoreless, running out winners 8.12- 2.1
While the result, and only scoring in one quarter is very disappointing, there were a lot of positives to come out of the game in the way of the development of the three debutants and young guns Bridey Jackman and Chelsea Hutchinson who are starting to find their feet at WAFLW level and played their best games for the club.

Subiaco 8.12 60

ROGERS CUP
Strong performances all over the ground again this week from the Rogers team, with the girls showing a lot of belief in themselves and their team mates. We had Ava Cristodero as captain, with Tessa Kongras and Holly Bilcich getting the call up to the league team. The girls adjusted quickly with a positive attitude to take more responsibility. The backline held firm in the first three quarters with Anja Pickston and Charlize Thompson working together with a “None shall pass” attitude. The mids held a wonderful clearance advantage until the last term when we had a bit of a lapse and let them in for two late goals. The forwards found some inventive ways to kick goals, with Ashlee Norwood getting 4 goals, for the second week in a row. Charli Holmes was the beneficiary of a 100m penalty goal, thanks to her hustle in running up on the first 50 quickly and catching the Subiaco girl inside the protected area.
All up a good day at the office for the Rogers girls. We now have a bye this weekend and will have to be ready to play all four quarters, when we come up against South Fremantle on the 6th of May.
On a sad note, it was very disappointing to lose AJ Rowley to a suspected ACL injury during the last minutes of training on Thursday evening, our thoughts are with her.
