WAFLW ROUND 10 REVIEW
WAFLW
Round 10 had the WAFLW up against the undefeated ladder leaders in Claremont at home before the men’s WAFL game and it was Ebony Bilcich’s 50th WAFLW game, all played for Peel. The girls were keen to continue to improve on the positive signs we saw last week, as well as put on a show for their Mum’s ahead of Mother’s Day.
We started in red hot fashion with a quick centre break, contested mark and goal to Kira Phillips in the opening minute of the game. Unfortunately after that it was all one way traffic to Claremont who had the wind and whose bigger bodies and experience dominated the rest of the quarter, taking a solid lead into quarter time 5.1 to 1.0.
The second quarter continued in the same fashion with Claremont’s bigger bodies winning contested ball all over the ground and dominating field position. The girls tried hard and slowed Claremont’s scoring but we were unable to move the ball forward and the scoreboard. Claremont extending their lead at half time 7.2 to 1.0.
The third was a repeat of the second with Claremont dominating field position but we started to get some balls forward with clean passages of play, despite our best efforts we were still unable to hit the scoreboard. The positives were that we were starting to win some ball and held Claremont to one goal but they were in a commanding position at three quarter time 8.7 to 1.0.
In the last we set ourselves to hit the scoreboard and to try and win the quarter. The girls fought hard and limited Claremont to two goals for the quarter and we managed one ourselves with a Kira Phillips special with a snap over her head. While we didn’t win the quarter we challenged well. Claremont staying undefeated and on top of the table 10.9 to 2.1.
While the scoreboard didn’t reflect the effort, the emergence and development of our youth showed again, and they will be better for the experience. To shut Claremont down to just 3 goals after half time was also very pleasing.

This week we take on West Perth at home at 2pm and it’s our Captain Ebony (Chippy) Dowson’s 150thleague game, all of which have been played for Peel Thunder. The first ever player to reach this milestone at the club. She has been an outstanding player and leader at the club over her journey, winning the Fenton medal and is a dual premiership player. We are keen to have a huge game for her and would love as much support as possible to make this day special for her.
Congratulations Chippy!!
ROGERS CUP
With Claremont second on the ladder this game was going to be a good challenge for us.
We started with excellent energy and cohesion, working well across all 3 lines, and at the first break we held a slim lead.
In the second quarter the backline had to deal with repeat entries from Claremont. We did well to put their forwards off their scoring shots time and again. The large number of missed shots still had us in touch at half time.
Following the main break Claremont started to find the goals and we were unable to move our score.
It was a good effort from an undermanned team. We were left in no doubt that we have work to do on the training track.
