WAFLW Rd 12 review
WAFLW
Round 12 saw our WAFLW girls travel to Fremantle Oval to take on the second-placed South Fremantle for the indigenous round. Thanks to Dan McHenry for designing our amazing jumpers.
The girls started well winning the opening clearance, but Souths quickly gained control of the game with their bigger bodies and superior work rate. Evie Cowcher was super impressive down back taking 6 intercept marks for the quarter. While we had some forward entries which was pleasing, we were unable to hit the scoreboard whilst South managed three for the quarter to take a solid lead at the break. 3.1 – 0.0
The second we started well again and moved the ball well to set up Kira Phillips in the goal square with a strong contested mark however she was unable to finish off her good work. We managed to lock the ball into our half of the ground and get some repeated entries inside 50 which was pleasing and resulted in another shot to Kira who kicked our first goal of the game. Unfortunately, Souths took control after that and piled on 4 goals themselves, to make matters worse Ebony “Chippy” Dowson was out for the rest of the game with a knock to the jaw. Half time 7.3 – 1.1
The third saw our best football for the game and we challenged heavily. Kaitlyn Shroj and Dakota Sexton were impressive in the midfield as were Evie Cowcher, Chelsea Hutchinson and Abby Barnden down back. Kira Phillips kicked her second for the game to breathe some life into the game but Souths responded with one late themselves to hold their advantage at the final break. 8.7-2.0
Unfortunately, the last quarter was all Souths as they showed their class and the quality unit they have become. Piling on another 4 goals and keeping us scoreless to run out winners with 59 inside 50’s to 12. 12.10 - 2.2.
While the result is very disappointing, to see our young players all step up and have good games against strong bodies is very pleasing and the future is bright. None more than Evie Cowcher who had 22 kicks, 8 handballs, 12 marks, the most intercepts and 4 tackles playing off half-back.
Best players were Evie Cowcher, Kaitlyn Shroj, Dakota Sexton, Chelsea Hutchinson and Holly Britton
Goal Kickers: Kira Phillips with 2
Next week the WAFLW has a much-needed bye and the Rogers Cup team play Perth at Mineral Resources Park on Saturday night 5.10 pm.
