WAFL ROUND 8 REVIEW
WAFL
In a closely fought battle at Lane Group Stadium, Peel Thunder suffered a narrow 62 - 56 defeat against the Subiaco Lions. The wet conditions proved challenging for both teams, with either team unable to dominate throughout the game.
After trading behinds at either end, Subiaco struck first, to secure the first major of the match. Travis Colyer's goal from a difficult angle kept Thunder in contention, but scoring became increasingly difficult as the rain intensified.
Thunder took the lead in the second quarter through goals by Liam Henry and Josh Corbett, but a goal from Subiaco in the closing minutes of the half allowed them to regain a narrow one-point advantage at halftime.
The third term would see the lead change hands again, with Smooth passing between Brody Wemm and Sebit Kuek setting up a well-taken goal from Wemm that saw Peel marginally leading the scoring.
Despite two goals in the final term Subiaco had done enough to hold on to a one-goal victory.
Despite the loss, Peel Thunder showed resilience in the tough weather conditions. Thunder will now look towards this Saturday's clash against Claremont, a match up between 1st and 2nd that will no doubt be another hard-fought match from both sides.
RESERVES
Peel fell to another narrow 48 - 40 defeat in the Reserves side in what has been a challenging season so far. Peel did not make it an easy game for Subiaco, who sit second on the reserves ladder based on percentage.
Subiaco started strong in the first term pilling on 3 goals to Peel's solo behind, ending the first quarter 19 behind. Peel came out to the rest of the game with a renewed focus in the second quarter, collecting 7 scoring shots to Subiaco's 2.
The final quarter provided for some tense action as Peel contained Subiaco to only one behind for the quarter while scoring two majors themselves. With the clock not on Peel's side, Subiaco was eventually able to hold out for the Victory.
COLTS
Peel 9.8 62 def by Subiaco 13.13 91
Sunday morning football was the order of the long weekend, with an in-form Subiaco team taking on a Peel side coming off their fourth loss of the season. The contest itself had its moments, particularly the third quarter where the Thunder produced some of their most attractive football of the season, but it was an 18-minute hot streak from the visitors where they jumped out to a handsome lead that they would never relinquish. In the end, the Lions were comfortable in coming away with a 29-point victory.
The Good
- Third Quarter Cohesion – A five-goal haul saw the young Thunder side give Subiaco reason to worry. Quality ball movement and repeated pressure enabled a quarter with ten scoring shots and multiple entries into our forward 50. Doing this more often will reap rewards.
- Goalkickers With Multiple Majors – This week saw some forward line punch with most of it provided by Toby Jenkins (3 goals) and Matt Thomson (2 goals). Hopefully, this trend will continue when we add to the list of players who hit the scoreboard on multiple occasions because scoreboard pressure is good pressure.
The Bad
- Red Time And Beyond – A small lapse in the final two minutes of the first quarter gifted the Lions two goals along with an unbroken six-goal run in the second and saw the game get away, albeit in a quick fashion. Focus and discipline for longer is required to eliminate these lapses and keep our opposition honest.
The season ledger stands at 2-5 with plenty of areas to work upon. Another strong week on the track will prepare us to take on the best side in the competition, Claremont who will have some talent back from PSA duties. To be the best you have to beat the best, and we will get that opportunity this Saturday at REVO Stadium.
Peel Thunder take on Claremont Tigers this Saturday at Revo Fitness Stadium.
