Melanoma WA – Guest Speaker Mr Clint Heal
On Monday night, Peel Thunder playing squad had a presentation from former player in Clint Heal discussing the impacts of Melanoma in our country and the importance of looking after your skin and sun safety.
Clint is the founder and CEO of Melanoma WA and is a Melanoma survivor and explained his story to the players in hope that it will increase their awareness of prevention self care. Clint didn’t "fit" the normal characteristics of someone susceptible to skin cancer. He tanned easily but wore full wet suits out in the surf and as a kid always slapped on the sunscreen and the zinc.
Brad Bootsma, Football Manager of Peel Thunder said, "It is great that Clint is willing to come down and share his story with the boys, so they can understand first hand the impact of skin cancer and that unfortunately nobody is invincible."
The Peel region is home to the highest number of skin cancers detected in Australia. Clint told the squad how ,“In the younger age groups especially, people really felt they were bullet proof and didn’t really understand how life threatening skin cancer could be until they got it themselves. Early detection is crucial. The quicker they adopt sun and skin safety and get their skin checked , the more likely they will be around for longer and enjoy a healthy life.”
Melanoma WA will be holding a Support group meeting in the Peel Region on Thursday the 9 January at the Bortolo Pavillion (corner Bortolo and Murdoch Drive in Mandurah),commencing at 5.30pm. All are welcome.
The support meeting is open to anyone who has been touched by Melanoma, not just those living with Melanoma themselves. This means people, such as family and friends, who are caring for those living with melanoma.
