THE Peel Football Club has unveiled the next wave of talent, with the Under 16s squad being named last week.

It comes ahead of a huge season for the Under 16s, who will travel to Melbourne in July to tour the facilities of three AFL clubs, play against a TAC Cup Under 16s side, and watch three AFL matches.

Having started with a base squad of 74 in the program, the Peel squad was whittled down to 35, with the majority coming through the club’s Under 14s and 15s programs.

Of the 35-man squad, 28 have come through the Peel region while seven are from the South West.

Club Development Manager John Deitz said the squad was a really good blend of athletic, medium-tall players, featuring a couple of diminutive small players and developing key prospects. 

“We’ve got a really good mix within the squad, which is what the state selectors will hopefully be looking for within our group,” Deitz said.

“There’s a good mix between the two zones (Peel and South West) so we’re very excited about this year.”

The coaching group has also been bolstered with the inclusion of Peel foundation player and former Swan Districts champion Steve Bazzo as assistant coach, who brings over 200 games of WAFL experience.

But the highlight of the year for the Peel youngsters is undoubtedly the Melbourne trip in July, and while it is not a cheap affair, Deitz said the help of player sponsorships has made a massive difference.

“A lot of players are bringing in sponsors to cover their costs for the 16s carnival, so that’s been a really good initiative, 13 of the 35 have got sponsors which is great.”

A captain will be named at Peel’s jumper presentation night next month.
