Peel Thunder Launches New All Abilities Wheelchair Football Team
Peel Thunder Football Club is proud to announce the formation of our first ever All Abilities Wheelchair Football Team, joining the WA All Abilities Wheelchair Football League for the 2025 season. This exciting step forward is part of our club’s commitment to building a more inclusive and connected community, both on and off the field.
The initiative is being driven by passionate wheelchair footballer Brock Steele, who has been involved in the sport for several years and will lead the team. Brock has been instrumental in helping establish this new program at Peel Thunder, and his enthusiasm for creating space for more people to wear the Peel colours is inspiring.
Working alongside Brock is Peel Thunder Vice President Chris Fairman, who will manage the team and ensure everything runs smoothly in the lead up to the season. Both Brock and Chris recently spoke to our senior playing group, outlining the vision behind the team and the importance of embracing and supporting this initiative as a club.
“Wheelchair football is about the same thing as any other level of footy, it’s about putting on the jumper and representing our colours,” said Brock. “It’s not just about ability, it’s about community.”
The Peel Thunder All Abilities Wheelchair Football Team will officially compete in the 2025 WA All Abilities Football League, with the season starting on the 27th of September 2025. The season will run for 12 weeks, with all participating clubs playing their matches in Claremont.
The league already features six established teams and continues to grow. Wheelchair football is played on a basketball court with goalposts either end. Each team fields five players at a time, with squads rotating throughout the game to allow for maximum participation. The rules have been adapted to suit the format: a handball equates to a ‘kick’, and an underarm throw is considered a ‘handball.’
One of the most exciting aspects of wheelchair football is that you don’t need to have any sort of disability to take part. The league is open to people of all ages, genders, and abilities, and encourages a mix of players with and without disabilities. Whether you or a family member or friend is looking for a new way to be part of the Peel Thunder Community, this program offers a place for you.
There will be tryout days announced soon, and everyone is welcome to come along, whether you’re looking to play, volunteer, or simply support from the sidelines.
Even if you can’t take the court, there are many ways to get involved. From helping out with the team logistics to simply spreading the word, we encourage our Peel Thunder family to get behind this new chapter in our club’s history.
“The more involvement there is, the better,” said Chris. “This team isn’t just an add-on; it’s an extension of what it means to be part of Peel Thunder.”
We’re calling on all members of the Peel community to support the launch of our All Abilities Wheelchair Football Team. This is more than just a new team, it’s a celebration of inclusion, teamwork, and a passion for footy.
Want to learn more, get involved, or sign up for tryouts. Stay tuned to our website and socials for updates or reach out to the club directly.
Together we can start our team off strong.
We are currently seeking expressions of interest for a Naming Rights Partner for our All Abilities Wheelchair Football Team.
