Krystal Carter calls time on WAFLW Football Career.
After 12 years, 112 league games, two premierships and an immeasurable impact on the Peel Thunder Football Club, Krystal Carter will run out for her final WAFLW game this weekend.
A true leader, a premiership captain, a Life Member and one of the most influential figures in Peel Thunder’s women’s program, Krystal leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond what she achieved on the field.
Since joining the club over a decade ago, Krystal has been a constant through every stage of Peel’s WAFLW journey. Through the highs and the challenges, she has represented everything it means to be a Thunder player; loyalty, resilience, hard work and an unwavering commitment to the people around her.
Carter played a crucial role in building the foundations of the Peel Thunder women’s program, helping lead the club through one of its most successful eras. After a challenging 2019 season, she captained the side to a historic premiership in 2020, before being part of the WAFLW Reserves premiership success in 2021.
Her leadership, determination and team-first attitude have been defining qualities throughout her career, with Carter recognised as the Trademark Player in 2023, an honour that reflected the values she displayed every time she represented the club.
For Carter, Peel Thunder has been much more than just a football club.
“Peel has been one constant through so many different chapters of my life,” Carter said.
“I’ll always be proud to have been part of the club especially in our premiership years. Some places become part of who you are and for me Peel will always be one of those places.
“You have to leave football eventually, but the people and memories stay with you. That’s what I’ll take most from my time at Peel.”
Having coached Krystal throughout much of her career, Mark Fenton said her influence as a leader was unlike any other.
“As Krystal’s coach she was the greatest captain I ever coached, male or female,” Fenton said.
“She was selfless, hardworking, honest and always put her teammates first. Without her leadership I don’t believe we would have won the 2020 WAFLW premiership after coming last in 2019.”
Across her time at Peel, Krystal has not only inspired success but has shaped the culture of the women’s program. Her impact has been felt by teammates, coaches, staff and the next generation of players coming through the club.
Peel Thunder Women’s Football Coordinator Rachael Hayes said Carter’s contribution over the past 12 years will continue to influence the club for years to come.
“During my 10 seasons at the Peel Thunder Football Club, Krystal Carter has shown outstanding leadership both on and off the field,”.
“Through the highs and the lows, she has consistently set the standard for everyone in our women’s program with her commitment, positive attitude, and the example she provides to every player who walks through our doors.
“Krystal’s ability to inspire and motivate the group when times are tough is second to none. Even while facing the challenges of her own ACL injury, she continued to put the team first, lifting those around her with her resilience and determination.
“Loved by her teammates, past and present, respected by her opponents, and admired by everyone fortunate enough to have been along for the journey, Krystal has left an incredible legacy at Peel Thunder. She will be missed, but her impact on our club and our people will be felt for many years to come.”
While Carter’s playing career comes to an end this weekend, the legacy she leaves behind is firmly embedded in the history of Peel Thunder.
A premiership captain. A Life Member. A leader. A teammate. A true Thunder person.
Thank you, Krystal.
