WAFLW

Round 8 saw the WAFLW come up against a very strong South Fremantle side at Lane Group Stadium. South Fremantle recruited heavily over the off season, they are playing a strong brand of footy with the most dangerous forward line in the competition and were sitting second on the ladder.

We went in with a good side on paper but very young and inexperienced with half the side playing less than 10 games including 6 playing 2 or less.  It was exciting to debut three more Rogers cup players in Ashlee Norwood, Ava Cristodero and long term rogers cup player Charlize Thompson.

We started the game well but the bigger bodies and their experience started to take control at the 5 minute mark of the first quarter and continued to dominate the first half.  Leaving us trailing heavily at the main break with only four forward entries  7.5 to 0.1.

With a restructure at half time and change in mindset we played our best football for the game in the third more than doubling our inside 50 count but were still unable to find the major opening.  Souths continued to take their opportunities and while we tried hard and moved the ball better, they continued to extend their lead 9.8 to 0.2.

The final quarter Souths continued to out body and win contested ball giving their forwards plenty of supply, our backs fought hard all day but the weight of supply was telling.  Souths running out big winners   12.10 to 1.2

While we were outclassed on the weekend there was some real positives in development of the younger players.  Norwood and Thompson competed well in their debuts. Lara Thomas competed well in the ruck after Kaitlyn Hayes had to go to hospital with a leg injury.  Chelsea Hutchinson and Anke Grove tried hard all day to hold up Souths and should be proud of their efforts.

Thanks to everyone that came down and supported the girls, your support is greatly appreciated.  Stick with us the talent is coming through and we are working hard to turn our performances around.
