WAFL ROUND 6 REVIEW

WAFL

After a scratchy first quarter our League side played some quality football to run out 89-point winners, solidifying our position on top of the WAFL ladder leading into the State Game.

The defensive system was again on show against West Coast, restricting the Eagles to just 2 goals after the quarter time break. Karl Worner continued his rapid rise as a damaging half-back with 36 disposals and 11 marks, while Nathan Wilson continues to hurt the opposition with his lethal kicking skills.

Ben Hancock, Liam Henry, Haydn Matthews and Tom Emmett combined well through the middle of the ground to help Peel to 30 more inside 50’s than the opposition. Debutant Max Knobel also combined well with Liam Reidy in the ruck to assist our midfield with first possession at stoppages.

South Mandurah product, Brody Wemm was the leading goal kicker on the day with 4 majors to go along with 18 disposals and some elite defensive pressure.

The State Game bye presents a great opportunity for the players to freshen up before we take on the reigning premiers, West Perth, on their home turf.

For their efforts on the day Karl Worner, Liam Henry, Sam Sturt, Ben Hancock & Brody Wemm all received nods in the WAFL Team of The Week.

COLTS

Green Light, All Night’ – Colts vs State 16’s (Trial Match)

Last Saturday, our Colts squad played the State 16’s under lights in a Trial Match – And what a game it turned out to be.

The theme was ‘Green Light, All Night’, with the players simply encouraged to take the game on, play with flare and back themselves in. Up against a very talented State 16’s side, our Colts players certainly took the game on with free-flowing football evident across all four quarters.

This match provided an opportunity to all squad members who hadn't yet played a game this year and for our State 16’s players to build strong confidence, heading into their Championships. We were very pleased to see the return of Blake Russell back into the playing side, along with welcoming in Peel Thunder zoned State 16’s players, Basil Hart (4 impressive goals) and Noah Midani (strong defensive game).

Ethan Logan was dominant across a wing and then as an inside midfielder, racking up plenty of possessions and providing leadership to the younger players. Clay Hall and Reece Torrent provided fantastic rebound from defence in their first half of playing time, while South West based 17 year olds Heath Scurria, Luke Bennett, Jack Spence and Bronson Martin impressed on debut. Another highlight was to see the return of 2022 Colts Premiership player, Will Dimasi back for his first game this year, following an interrupted pre-season. Will’s classy ball use across half-back was noticeable and it was great to see him back out there.

On the final siren, the Colts boys got over the line in a competitive hit-out.  Above all – This was a win-win all round, with confidence and momentum built across the entire Colts squad and playing opportunities now provided to all Colts squad members already in Season 2023, which is fantastic with positions now available coming into Round 7, with our State 18’s and State 16’s commencing their championships.

This weekend is our second consecutive bye, with West Perth (away) being our next Colts match for Round 7.
