Peel Thunder have continued to push their case as premiership contenders, with a 28-point victory over East Perth at Leederville Oval on Saturday.

Peel kicked five goals to one in a dominant third term, to set up their fifth win-in-a-row and a 12.7 (79) to 7.9 (51) victory.

Peel defender Matthew Piggott said Rory O’Brien’s 33 disposals and six tackles were crucial for his side.

“I thought he was awesome, he plays trade mark footy nearly every game and he just keeps finding ways to get the footy and it’s awesome for us,” he said.

Piggott was also impressed with Peel youngster Hayden Matthews, who finished with 25 disposals and six tackles.

“I thought he was really good for us in tight, in the congestion,” he said.

“It’s really rewarding to see him play really good footy coming out of the reserves at the start of the year.”

ROUND 17 - WITH SENIOR DEVELOPMENT COACH BRAD DODD

Monday, July 17, 2017 - 7:59 PM

The Thunder Development team were looking to back up on the road with another positive performance against East Perth at Medibank Stadium. The teams had met twice previously, with the Royals putting the Thunder to the sword in Round 1 only for Peel to return the favour in Round 7. Chris Wrigley was promoted to the League side to make his debut after a strong performance against West Perth. Chris’s promotion is a great story for all our players as he has worked hard on his game and certainly earned his opportunity. Brad Walsh was also promoted after a great game against the Falcons, while we welcomed back James Kirby, Noah Hura, Cameron Hayden-Quartermaine and Aaron Victor. Jaidon Kearing was also selected to make his debut. Only 18, Jaidon is a small forward/wing who has spent most of the year with the Colts- sitting 3rd on their goal kicking table.

East Perth started the stronger side but through a combination of their poor ball use, luck and our solid defending, Peel managed to weather the early storm to kick the first goal of the game through a Cameron H-Q snap, after some smart work from Brett Milward. The next 10 minutes of the quarter was a real arm wrestle with both sides wasting opportunities on goals. Brett Milward, again looking dangerous, finally finished off some good work up the ground to convert after taking a strong mark. East Perth answered almost immediately after a high tackle gave them a simple set shot before Luke Strnadica converted after the siren to give the Thunder a 12 point buffer at 1/4 time.

Senior Development - Round 16 Peel Thunder v West Perth

Report - Senior Development Coach Brad Dodd

The Thunder made the long trek to Joondalup to take on West Perth looking to bounce back from the disappointing result against the Tigers. Matt Piggott was rewarded for some strong form by making his debut with the League side. It’s a great story of perseverance as his career to date has featured plenty of testing times through a string of major injuries. James Kirby, one of our most consistent players for the year, was also out with an eye injury but we welcomed back Calvin Thorne, Michael Humble, Luke Strnadica and Brad Walsh.

ROUND 15 - POST MATCH REPORT WITH COACH BRAD DODD

Development Report V CL RD 15

After a return to the winners list, the Peel Development team looked forward to the challenge of taking on the reigning Premiers, Claremont on a wet and windy Saturday at Bendigo Bank Stadium. When the teams previously met, Claremont produced a dominant display to come away with the win convincingly. Keen to put up a more competitive display, the young Peel side started promisingly into a stiff breeze only for the Tigers to counter attack and get the first goal out the back through a lightening quick, Corey Mitchell.
