2017 PTFC OCEAN HILL ACADEMY PROGRAM WRAP UP

Monday, October 16, 2017 - 10:22 AM

The Ocean Hill Peel Thunder Academy  program has wrapped up for the 2017 season, with the WAFL development carnival held over the September/October holidays.

The carnival saw the 5 Peel Thunder sides (Year 8 Premier and Development, Year 9 Premier and Development and Year 10) play 4 games across the 2 weeks against Claremont, South West, South Fremantle and Perth, and has given players the ability to test themselves against the best players their age in the state.

The Year 8 program was designed to give players an understanding of the basic requirements of WAFL football and an introduction to the club environment. The program was heavily focussed on skill development and developing an understanding of the style of football expected as they progress through the club. The squad was coached by Lee Dawson who was assisted by Craig Lindsay, Craig Gault, Theo Kearing and Neville Litchfield. Both the premier and development squads won 2 games and lost 2 through the carnival.

The year 9 program was designed to continue to improve skill development whilst also aiming to develop players tactical understanding and development. A heavy focus was on teaching elements such as stoppage work, style of play, and defensive skills to prepare the players for under 16 football. The squad was well coached by Michael Glassborow with assistant coaches Pierce Dawson, Darren Dews, Shane Myers, Jayden Heuer, Steve Markham and Kevin Dalgetty. The premier side won 2 games and lost 2 games, whilst the development side won 3 games and lost 1 over the carnival.

2017 Dudley Tuckey Medallist – Sam Collins

Rarely does a Full Back win a fairest and best Award.   Such was Sam’s domination of all WAFL forwards that he was recognised as the premier defender in the competition.

His ability to mark nearly everything that came his way was inspiring. If he couldn't mark, he spoilt. Golden Fist.

He led the best defence in the competition and was outstanding in the finals for Peel Thunder.  His attitude is exemplary, he leads by example and is a complete footballer.

A very deserving winner, and a Fairest and Best winner in a premiership team.  A high honour.

Well done Sam.

PREMIERSHIP GLORY WITH COACH CAM SHEPHERD

Thursday, September 28, 2017 - 3:25 PM

The last game of Australian Rules ever to be played at Subiaco Oval (Domain Stadium) was an intense and physical encounter. Two evenly matched teams with great pride. There was only to be one winner, and that was to be Peel Thunder FC. The youngest club in the competition had won Back to Back premierships.

The teams resolve and ability to work together for the common cause was evident throughout the battle.

The first quarter erupted at a frenetic pace with Peel getting an early break, scoring the first two goals through Dawson and Ugle  before the rain set in. With the rain came the stoppages. Sean Darcy started to exert his influence and Danyle Pearce was effective in surging the ball forward.

At Quarter time Peel held a lead of under a goal and the game was bound to be a battlefield.  Peel suffered the loss of Zac Dawson with a serious leg injury and were a man down midway through the first quarter which was magnified as Josh Deluca suffered  a massive cork to his thigh which limited his ability to run at speed.   Peel were under siege with 3 quarters still to play.

THUNDER SECURE GRAND FINAL POSITION

Monday, September 11, 2017 - 5:17 PM

Written by: Fraser Palamara

Peel Thunder are back-to-back grand finalists after beating the Subiaco Lions by 24-points at Leederville Oval to earn a spot in the 2017 WAFL Grand Final.  The Thunder held the lead at each major break finishing with a final score of 14.8 (92) to Subiaco’s 10.8 (68).

Peel player Brayden Lawler said securing a win and a spot in the grand final is good, but is only half the job.  “It’s awesome, Peel are a good chance to go back to back this year,” he said

“It’s a great feeling, but we know that getting there is only half the job and we still have to rock up to the game and give a good effort on the day and come home with a win.”

Subiaco were first to score with a behind one minute into the game, but were goalless until 25 minutes into the first term, whilst Peel scored five majors.

Lawler expressed the importance of having a strong start to the game as Subiaco broke away early last time they played each other.
